This box is larger than it appears to be: 11 inches by 7.5 inches by 6.5 inches high. The brass hinges and lock plate are beautifully worked. It also has little round brass bun feet. You can see that it has quite a bit of age by the crackling, but despite that it's in wonderful condition. I think it's either Chinese or Indian. what do you think?
I think Chinese, the hardware for the lock and the hinges as well as bun feet. This size is often called a document box, I used to have made with wood and lacquer also in green and red, don't know if the colors are symbolic.
This design is wonderful. How does it look inside, is it lined with cedar? Thanks for posting.
thank you truthordare. the inside is painted solid black. i thought that it should have a liner and i may make a quilted silk one for it. not sure yet... thank you for the info!
