Rare and unusual emergency travel application for Lizzie Porter - a US national living in Vienna. Date of issue is 4/12/17 - > the USA enters WW1 on 4/6/17 after declaring War on Germany and the Central Powers (Austria-Hungary) after unrestricted submarine warfare started in January 1917 followed by the Zimmerman Letter. This lady traveled from Vienna to Switzerland and then France. Document has Consular Blind Stamp from US Embassy in Vienna. Signed on 12 April 1917 by Third Secretary of Embassy Herbert Gould. Ms. Porter had to make an Oath of Allegiance to defend the Constitution of the US as the President or a Cabinet officer would take upon assuming office and Ms. Porter signs underneath it - I have an actual Emergency Passport issued in Panama in 1917 to a gentleman returning to the USA to join the Army!
