old little oddly 'round' shaped flashlight

Here's another thing I came across somewhere-or-other many years ago and have held onto ever since simply because I've always thought it was way cool. ;-) :-) I don't think I've seen another like it since, nor did/do I know much at all about exactly how old it is, who made it, or if it has any specific purpose.

In a sort of 'squished spherical' overall shape, it is a flashlight meant to utilize two C-cell sized batteries. Measuring about 3-1/2" across overall and 1-3/4" thick, the flat glass lens over the light bulb and reflector is 2" across and has a raised/embossed bezel holding both to the front part of the light, which detaches from the rear portion with a slight sideways twist/pull to reveal the bulb, its socket, battery holders, and switch mechanism all inside that half of the housing. A round wire 'bail' is also attached which can swing away from it as a handle or fold back against its midsection.

It is very nicely made of (nickel?) plated metal (brass, probably) throughout. There is a small (and faint) stamping in the center of its backside, all I can make out from it are the words "CHASE" and "PAT. APPL'D FOR" with a partial logo graphic(s?) of some sort. The only other markings anywhere on it (not pictured) are the words "PAT. APPL'D FOR U.S.A." with an arrow graphic, on its outer edge to indicate which way to twist it open.

HAS ANYBODY ELSE EVER SEEN ONE OF THESE?? If so, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts!! Googling just now found this similar-ish light (calling it a "bomb light"?!!) which might suggest 1930's vintage...?
