I bought this painted egg of alabaster (?) at a fleamarket. Height 6 cm. I've googled that they are made by the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe as souvenirs for tourists. Is that right ? Can you tell me more ?

I asked a friend from Zimbabwe about these. He said yes, but most were from a country just to the East or NE, and I can't remember the name. They change yearly.
Many thanks Blunderbuss2. If they change yearly, it would be interesting to hear which year this one is from ! And also which other country.
OK, talked to my friend again & an Eng. mercenary friend who fought there for yrs.. Yeah we get a diversified lot here! The prevalent country they are made in is Namibia and soapstone is the usual material. They didn't know anything about the art representing dates. Described the cheetah & the tree and the merc. guessed at the balboa tree, which he said was locally known as the "upside-down tree", but I know those trees & think he was wrong going my description. Probably 1/4 of my friends are from S. Afrika & countries around there. When the countries there were forced to abandon "apartheid" the blacks took up apartheid against the whites and the world & press then turned a blind eye on it.
