The local Singer store in my hometown offered group sewing lessons. Participants paid a fee to be taught everything from how to select patterns and appropriate weight fabric, notions, how to lay out a pattern, measuring, fitting, machine operation, and so much more. Everyone had to make an outfit and for the class finale, model the outfit in a little fashion show for our families/friends.
My mother lied about my age so I could participate!! I was a couple of years too young but by the time the secret was out, I was well into my project and they let me stay. I think I was 12.
My project was a red bandana- print blouse (button front with set-in sleeves) with a black wrap-around skirt which was lined with the red bandana-print fabric!
Huge project for a little girl but I loved the class! Never forgot what I learned there.
