This is a King Size Matchbox meant to compete with Corgi. This model was released in October 1968 and was followed by three other models 1969 for the King Size lines. This was the first K-21 and the last as the Super Kings replaced them in 1971. The Cougar became a dragster. So this model is probably from 1969-1970. 1969 is more likely as they were winding down the line in 1970.
The features for this model are displayed on top of the box seen in photo#3. It has working suspension, steerable wheels and opening doors. The wheels steer when you turn the car, it was called auto-steer.
Looking at the back of box it looks like they are at Le Mans or some other respectable racing event. Matchbox artwork tends to have the vehicles at some sort of respectable event.
Thanks FtA, I'm glad you posted this. I saw a King Size Charger('71 ?) on eBay and wondered about the size. What's the approximate scale of these? The box even looks Corgi-like. That's what struck me before I even read your post that confirmed it. This is a nice item, I guess they didn't want to pursue the series for the long run. It's shame they didn't, I like the features and detail.
Thank you very much Toyrebel. It is pretty much the same scale as the Corgis. Not sure what the exact scale is probably 1:43.
