Very unusual error 2011 Lincoln penny. Front and back the stamping is very faint and the underlying zinc is visible over much of the coin. I don't know how this happened but I think it is neat.

I looks to me like someone was experimenting with an acidic substance.
I agree with TreasureTex, years ago when I was young we did such things. I remember using both acid and mercury on pennies. The mercury turned them bright silver color but never dried. Back then schools had a good supply of chemicals in the lab for us to play with.
What acid will eat away the copper and leave the zinc? All acids I know of work the opposite and eat away the zinc and leaves the copper.
Hydrochloric acid or muriatic acid does funny things to some metals. Other metals it does wonderful things.
Well idk if you all that are sharing opinions on here are professionals but i would have to disagree with all of you because i have the exact same penny now unless someone done same thing to my penny i think its a flaw when penny was made and im sure ill find a collecter thatll agree and when i do so ill be sure to let know
Agree-- not a mint error, but a chemical treatment.
I am not a professional coin dealer, just based on years of experience.
