WOWWWWW!!!! What did my brother find yesterday????
This beautiful piece was almost destroyed by a back hoe, while leveling and cleaning up the debris of a very old dilapidated house!!
Remarkably, through the leveling process this was not destroyed. Then, when he was clearing the debris, with back hoe, he saw a piece of the bowl protruding up out of the pile. It glistened in the sun and he stopped dozing to see what it was.....Low and behold, he pulled it out of the dirt and debris and found the top bowl piece.....NOT BROKEN OR CHIPPED!!!! He dug into the pile a little further, to see if any more treasures buried and he found the bottom piece too, along with a few other treasures.
But, this piece was ultimately the best of what he found. He knows I do resale and he was smart enough to see it was something I should investigate for him. Although, he's thinking of making some "project" out of it. I explained that before he did anything with this piece, I needed to see what it truly was first!!!!
I find it so amazing that this piece wasn't damaged and lost forever! For some reason this bowl was not destroyed.....It makes me think there is a 'very good reason' this was not damaged!!!!! Truly a found treasure in Texas!!! It's beautiful!!!!!
However, I would appreciate any help in identifying this piece....Is it possibly ' American Brilliant Cut Glass'? I am currently trying to research this item and I think I saw a glint view of this piece in a video clip, on display at the Dixon Gallery.
I don't see any hallmarks or I.D. on the pieces. So, I will continue to research the internet and try to find another one, to compare to, etc..... I just don't know the difference of glass manufacturers. Are Baccarat and other valuable pieces all marked with a hallmark?? Or are there rare, collectible pieces out there without marks?
Any help in identifying this lovely piece would be greatly appreciated!
Any info or direction as to where to begin looking would be greatly appreciated!!
Oh, sorry I forgot the dimensions on this piece:
Top bowl is not completely rounded...it's almost triangular in shape....But, mostly round. Overall width of bowl is 13" and height is 7.5". at highest tips.
Base is just over 8.5" across at top and the bottom of base is just over 6" across, with base height at 5.75" tall.
When both pieces are put together total height is 12.5" tall, at highest point.
I'm still researching this one.....But I noticed that most of the pinwheel patterns of ABC Glass has depressions/markings/cuttings within the very middle part of the pinwheel. This piece does not have that in pinwheel....Well, there is an inner circle of diamond cut hatching. But, within the middle of the diamond hatching, the circle of glass there is flat (no hatching or cuts).
There's the large outer pinwheel design, within the pinwheel is a circle of the diamond cut and within that circle of diamond cut is the flat no cut/design area ...........Would this still be a pinwheel design variation? Or possibly a way of distinguishing the various makers of this similar pinwheel design? Does it make any difference?
MYSTERY SOLVED!!!!
This is an APG punch bowl and pedestal made by the 'L.E. Smith Glass Company'....Aztec pattern. Turns out you can still buy this item from the manufacturer ($184.03 shipping included) ~ I didn't find out when they first started production of this specific pattern. So, no telling how old this specific one was made & purchased, since it was rescued from a very old dilapidated and leveled house. It's a 'LUCKY' piece, either way!
My brother hasn't decided what to do with it yet!!
Aztec was originally made by McKee while it was part of National Glass Company in 1904. It came in a large line. Original pieces have greater clarity and should be marked "Pres Cut" within a circle.
Thank You Paul.....I'll look up that info as well. Because what I found was from L.E.Smith Glass Co. The punchbowl did not have ANY markings on it! As it turns out my brother decided to keep the punchbowl and use it at our many family gatherings!
