We got this cool Sterling Gas sign from a collector in NC last year and finally got the paint stripped off of it and got it on a pole in the new parking annex at Lakeside Storage in Provo today. I read something about the history of the Company a couple of years ago but just can't remember it. I do recall that 2 Sterling Brothers and later their sister were the founders of Humble Oil in Humble Texas back in 1911, but I'm not sure if there was any connection? Any help about the beginnings of the Company would be greatly appreciated. I quite like the sign even tho I don't remember the history. Since part of our Museum is dedicated to educating the public about the history of each of the gas/oil companies who's signs we have, it would be nice to know the history of this one.

Thx for the info. I still am at a loss as to exactly when Sterling Gas began and how long it lasted. I think the Round signs came first and these Ovals were later, but have no dates? Interesting I can't just pull it up on Google?

My research showed it started in the 1920's, Both Sterling Oil of Quaker State and a seperate Company "Sterling Oil Co. of West Virginia" had Sterling Gas Stations in the 1920's and 1930's in NY, PA and WV, I don't know how long they lasted.
    4. EJW-54 EJW-54, 6 years ago
Also it was not the Sterling brothers of Humble oil.

I did find a Photo of a Sterling gas station with 1959 cars and your sign so 1920's to 1960 maybe.

      EJW-54,
Pretty amazing there isn't more info easily available on the Company? Weird!
      Thx again for the info.

Cool sign, I’ve wanted one of these because it has the first letter of my first and middle name. Louie Leofric

Isn't that "L" logo also the common abbreviation for the British "pound" currency?? No idea whatsoever if any relevance to anything about the sign, just curious...??
    10. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 6 years ago
      AnythingObscure
Exactly right. The L is actually the symbol for the British "Pound Sterling".

      Trey,
Whatever the reason, it's I great sign to find!
    12. EJW-54 EJW-54, 6 years ago
It sure is Rattletrap! especially as Sterling stations were only in NY,PA,WV and Ohio.

U happen to have any idea about how many Stations Sterling had in that handful of States?
    14. EJW-54 EJW-54, 6 years ago
Nope Rattletrap, there's info on who and when they started but not any on how many or how long they lasted and not very many photos either.

So can u pass e info along about who and when Sterling started as well as anything else about it of interest so we can offer it to the public? Many might not care but a few of us are alway interested and appreciate the info. Thx

A buddy of mine bought one of these for 25 bucks !!! In Pennsylvania, But it was chips holding hands LOL
    17. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 6 years ago
      Trey
I love the super chip signs! Like me, they show the miles they've been on! Nothing brings more comments than a super chipped up old sign. The Cherry ones hardly get noticed as people must think they're repos?
    18. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 6 years ago
      Trey,
Seems like you've got a few chips in the heart of yours, but it just keeps on pumping!
    19. EJW-54 EJW-54, 6 years ago
Sure Rattletrap, I got most of the info on http://www.oil150.com , Quaker State History search and Sterling oil and gas History. Have fun!
    20. Trey Trey, 6 years ago
My heart is strong as an OX !!! not a chip in sight LOL, my plumbing was old and outdated, but I got an upgrade !!! Never a warning sign or symptom. I been telling everyone I know to get a Heart Cath :)
    21. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 6 years ago
      Trey,
Ox hearts are only as good as the plumbing the use to get the blood where it needs to be. Like having a Duramax and a faulty tranny u don't get the power to the wheels. Glad u got your running gear back in order and are on the road full force! U have a lot of miles left to put on that chassis! Collecting cool signs I hope! Leave a few for me as I still need a few more

      EJW-54,
I think this sign was number 199 on a pole at the Lakeside zstorage Museum. I was unaware we were that close to 200 when we stood it up
