Here are some examples.
The first photo shows the back of an 1870s CDV with an ad for enlarging.
The two cabinet cards from the 1880s have photographers information on what the owner wanted in the enlargements. You will often see colors specified (hair/ eyes/ clothing). Many times there will be a label glued to the back with the information.

Thanks, Scott, I'm glad I just read this posting. On the back of my grandmother's baby photo, it says: "light brown, blue eyes, white dress, as is, name, address." Now I know why!
