Hi there. This is a beautiful dresser! For a temporary fix, you can use this, just click on my link here. This product has been around forever, in fact it was my grandmothers and she passed in 1981 and it still works like a charm.

If you want to have the whole thing redone, I highly suggest you have a professional do it that does know how to refinish old furniture. After all, you said you did not know how and I would hate to see you use this beautiful piece as your first project. It takes a whole lot of work and knowledge to accomplish this task. It's costly to have it redone, but may be worth every penny for you. Personally, I think I would just leave it as I don't feel it looks bad. It's beautifully hand carved.

I have used the old English myself and it does work good, but it seems the wood soaks it up so fast and if it doesn't soak it up, it just seems like it sits there, so... And I don't feel like Pledge is what is used to be back in the old days either. There are many different products out there. What you can do is go to an antique store, look at their furniture, ask them what they use and feel some pieces to see if you like the results. You don't want a thick build up of furniture polish. You may even want to try a furniture conditioner. It looks like and almost feels like hair conditioner.
