This chest was donated to my thrift store. It smells of camphor (that's why i think it's a camphor wood glory box). Carvings all around. Not in the best condition, but is very nice to look at. Could be made of mahogany? (or maybe just stained to look that way). Only mark I can find is in picture 2, this is on the top edge of the box portion, where the hasp on the lid meets the box. Box is approx. 36x18x16(deep) inches or so. Looking for an identification/manufacturer/value if possible. Thanks!

First of all read the rules. We don't ask for values here. Secondly the marks in picture #2 are the marks of the company that made the lock. If you research the lock maker it will give you a time period so you can date the item to an extent. You may or may not be able to identify the maker of the box. If the lock maker shows a list of companies that bought their locks then you might narrow it down more. You have lots of research to do.

Deliberating between Chinese and Japanese. I think Japanese based on the figures inside the carved decoration on the lid, their garments and hairdos.

These boxes were specifically used for special valuable silk fabric accessories, to avoid moths damaging them over time. It's a traditional size, looks to have the patina of some age, but the lock or metal hardware may not be original, it's hard to say.

Beautiful example, thanks for posting it.
