Nice piece!!! Does the box shape part have an opening??? if so it maybe to hold box matches?? Then it could be an Ashtray??
Stuff
Their right it's a smoking piece. The box shape piece would display a box of match's by sliding the match box cover down around the metal box leaving the matchs standing half way still in the box and accessible, and the box striker also. Probably for a pipe smoker as there are no cigarette rests
I agree w/rocker-sd about the purpose of the metal box.
These matchboxes would look particularly fine with this piece?!!

The box is solid it does not open it's a solid piece of metal and I changed my mind on the bronze I think it's made of copper mainly because of the greenish tarnish.? Still don't have a clue on what it could be although y'all gave some very interesting guesses I did some research and found out that the M.C.B and M.M. conventions stand for Master Car Builder and Master Mechanic the Master Mechanic was on locomotives I'm pretty sure the master car builders were for Railway cars not automobiles because 1904 was very early for that sort of thing .there was a convention in Saratoga Springs New York in June of 1904 but I haven't found out any more information on souvenirs or anything like that. I appreciate the input maybe someone will come up with what it actually could be I'm thinking a Inkwell holder in the square box was where they waxed a seal to a letter possibly I'm not sure. But it could still be a cigar ashtray in the Box was what held the but of the cigar I don't know just a guess
