NEW UPDATE: Well I had a hunch about Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. Turns out I was right! Just found the third image whilst browsing for information.
UPDATE: I have now cropped part of the image, heavily underexposed it, and it seems to me that both the riders are wearing crowns on thier heads. Maybe Crusades? King Richard the Linonheart and Saladin?
Can anyone shed some light on which historic battle this would be representing please? I was thinking maybe something to do with British Dragoons? The scene looks familiar somehow but I cannot place it.
Not sure if both the soldiers are wearing crowns.

What a lovely brooch. My thought maybe the Crusades, or maybe a Greek battle?
    3. Passion4Cameos Passion4Cameos, 6 years ago
Not sure about the crusades AdeleC. I don't think the one on the left is a Knight. I will look up Greek battles though thanks.
Blundrbuss2 its a great piece yes. Quite rare to find.

I think there is a lot of artistic-license here. The hat style has been used in many western world regiments. I guess the style probably came originally from Prussia in the early to mid-18th century, thru mid to late 19th. Even used a bit in the U.S. around the Mexican War. The style of battle axe seems more toward medieval. I also think the scene is late enough to include guns, which makes the shield obsolete. I'm also looking at the style of the curb bit. Just my opinion.

Thank you blunderbuss2. I was thinking medieval too. I think one of the riders has a small round shield, so possibly no guns yet. I shall have to find out what curb bit means. I am hopeless when it comes to war and battles unless it is something very well known. At first I thought this may have been something to do with the battle of Waterloo. Now I think it may have been earlier. As you say, there is a lot of artistic-licenense so we may never know for sure. However I remember seeing this scene somewhere else, so it must be a copy of something possibly...

Maybe a scene from one of the Italian epic poems ... the Orlando Furioso or the Greusalemme Liberata ????
    7. Passion4Cameos Passion4Cameos, 6 years ago
Thanks for the suggestion vetraio50. I looked up both your suggestions but feel they do not match due to different hats, banners etc. I myself was also thinking perhaps, Crusades, Richard the Lion Heart? I have noe cropped part of the image, heavily underexposed it, and it seems to me that both the riders are wearing crowns on thier heads.

      Crusades? King Richaard versus Saladin?
    9. Passion4Cameos Passion4Cameos, 6 years ago
AdeleC it was indeed the crusades :)

Your artist put what looks like a shako rather than a crown on Richard. That changed the whole concept for me.
    11. Passion4Cameos Passion4Cameos, 6 years ago
blunderbuss2 if you look at the 2nd (underexposed) image you may be able to see what looks like crown points on top of Richard's head and Saladin's too. Very hard to make out admittedly! What I find a little strange is that the artisti did not put the croos over Richard's tunic, but he did give him the Crusaders sword.

I think you have found it for sure.

      Abraham Cooper, R.A. (1787-1868)
Richard I at the Battle of Ascolan.

But the cameo is probably based on the engraving by W. Gilles.

      Great research, guys !!!!!

Thank you for the clarification about the engraving by W.Giles. I will look it up vertraio50. By the way that battle I have found out, is known as the Battle of Jaffa. One thing leads to another when doing research. Thank you for the link. Ia m off to click it!!

Vetraio50 well done on finding that painting. So Hutchinson used that same painting as his illustration fro the book History of the Nations published in 1915. All very interesting!
