This was a great find. Beautiful Bronze Sculpture by British-Canadian Artist Mavis Ehlert (1922-2007) Ehlert attended St. Martin's School of Art and Chelsea School of Art in England, and moved to Ontario in 1952. Her works are held in both private and public collections. This piece is about 14 inches tall with a beautiful patina, is signed at the bottom back of the sculpture "Ehlert", as well as signed on the bottom of the base entitled "Today's Venus" signed Mavis Ehlert, and then marked "Unique" and initialed M.E.
I'm guessing that this is from the late 1960s or early 70s, and as it is marked "unique" was likely the only casting done. She was not known for doing editions. I'm very pleased to come across one of her works for my collection.

Certainly looks like she would have fit right in during the 60's with all the burn the bra and hippies.

Thanks for the comments Ilikethings, I agree on the way the details fade in and out, and I was drawn to it for some reason. It's very different, and I guess that's why I appreciate the work so much. Some of her work is extremely detailed and smooth flowing, yet others are like this, and I think I like this style the best.

PuS31nBoOTs, I have been in touch with Julie Gordon, we have mutual friends on Facebook and are planning on getting together so I can view more of her Mother's art. After I found this piece, I did a lot of research to find Julie, and we have had a couple great conversations. Hopefully we can meet up very soon!

pickrknows: I would have loved to, but unfortunately she has passed away several years ago. you are from Ancaster, one of her bronzes is in front of the Ancaster Library. She had quite a history in the Hamilton area, and there are several of her pieces in collections of the City.
