If anyone has any ideas about this piece I would love to hear them. Bought at an auction a couple of yrs ago because of it's unusual design. The heads appear to be hand carved.

That is a very unusual stand.
The base stand looks like it has some Victorian attributes (shape of the legs, central stand ornamentation below the legs, carving details on legs). It is probably very late Victorian as I would expect an earlier piece to have better detailed animal heads.
It may be the case of someone making it in the "style of" as opposed to a production piece. I would date it from about 1890- 1910.
Thanks for posting it!

Thank you Scott - that is about the period I thought as well. It is well made so if it were a home-made piece that craftsman was very good!
I was very fortunate to find it!
I really like it too.
It is not something that I have seen before.
