I believe this to be from a mid-19th century American martingale (horse tac) Check out the art, just below the horse's neck for what I'm refering to. Of course I think it's Federal, not Confederate, and it would have been commercialy made for some officer, not an issue item. It's about 3 inches tall, and may have been lacquered or otherwise coated at some point. It has three pretty stout attaching wires on the back, and I have the same sort of fasteners on a late 19th century US Army bridle Rosette I have my collection. Dissenting views are welcome, as I have not found something exactly like it in my reference books.

      These are heavily reproduced.

Post some pictures of the back.

Ugh. Hate that when it happens, but of course I'd rather know. I'll try to get a picture of the back up today or tomorrow.

Sorry for taking so long to post a picture of the back. I had been posting pictures I already had on my computer, so I had to dig out my camera, find a good place to take the shot, etc.

Anyway, I think bad news about this item is coming. I hadn’t taken a close look at it since I bought it 18-20 years ago in California. I am now wondering if the lacquered finish was just a botched attempt to give the item a patina, or if the original should have been lead filled instead of lead soldered. Anyway, given my finances at the time, I’m sure I didn’t pay much for it.
