I purchased this curiosity at a yard sale several years ago - thinking initially that it was a reproduction of an ethnic artifact - and actually purchased for the stand which is a very solid (iron) older piece (mid-century). After I examined I had second thoughts, did some research, but without much success. A couple of features worth noting - (1) It appears to be constructed of silver (or alloy) foil wraped around a base material (possibly wood?) My instict was that it was a body ornament but the fact that it does not "open" makes that unlikely. It's relatively large, measuring just under 7" across. Finally, the ornament is attached to the stand in a crude manner - with the post simply piercing the ornament? Any/all opinions welcome! Thanks
Do you think it originally stood by itself, without the stand? With the flat section on top, it looks as if you removed the stand, turned it over, it would be self-supporting. The stand looks off center anyway.
Interesting notion-however, it is not symetrical so would not balance? You are correct about the mounting - it is off-center suggesting an amateurish effort. Thanks for the comments.
