It’s carved from 32 pieces of sandalwood with unique intermittent reversed images.I was able to confirm that it’s Japanese not chinese..You have to look real close to even see this. Each piece is the reverse of the one next to it.I scoured the internet and all of the hand fan collectors websites and couldn’t find another one with carving like this. There’s other minor differences on each piece that could only have come from truly being hand carved. My only question is it’s age.It was with the other 3 fans that belonged to my wife’s grandfather. that we know are from the 1910.Those were mentioned in his journal and this wasn’t.It’s like new as the other 3 are that’s been boxed up since the 1960’s.The metal ring in the last picture was silver at one time. It’s old enough to have developed surface rust even though it’s always been in inside out of heat and humidity. Thanks for looking.
Gorgeous, finely worked !~
