This is a rare, early Rookwood Pottery Vase c. 1881.

The incised vine leaf design was carved by Ms. Harriet Wenderoth. Harriet Wenderoth, also known as "Nettie," was a student of the School of Design, and an early Rookwood pottery decorator from 1881-1883. She's known for her flowers on pitchers, ewers, vessels, vases, and boxes. Her work is almost exclusively carved designs. Inside the vase is glazed with crazing. The purpose for glazing the inside of the vase is to hold water. The incised "Rookwood Pottery" mark was used from 1880-1881. In 1882 they used an impressed, "Rookwood 1882" mark. Rookwood started out producing utility ware and this vase is an excellent example.
