I'd be kinda w/ keramikos & Gillian about the 'dimples', but maybe to make it easier/safer for restaurant/cafeteria workers passing lots of plates around while assembling your lunch??

BB2, my first thought was actually 'for deviled eggs', but why the h*ll would anybody wanna put one of each on opposite sides of a dinner plate enough to make an actual china pattern for it...?? Those go on serving plates with larger dimples all the way around...and frankly I destest the d*mn things anyways... <lol>
Cafeteria plates OTOH, as anyone that's ever stood in line more than a few times at such eateries knows, *do* occasionally "go rogue" and crash to the quarry tile in dramatic fashion...??
Brownies?? What brownies...??? It *is* Sunday after all, I suppose, isn't it...?? ;-)
Maybe when the brownie wears off, I'll solve this for everybody. Yeah, right !!
