My friend gave this piece of Mexican pottery to me and I am wondering about its origin. She said her parents got it in Mexico in the early 1900s. Thanks!

It's Mata Ortiz pottery, named for the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Chihuahua, where it is made. It's considered Contemporary Art Pottery by the Mexican government.
The potter, David Ortiz, is listed in Walter P. Park's book, "The Miracle of Mata Ortiz," and is described as having been making pottery for six years. Since the book was published in 1993, that would mean the late 1980s, (when the majority of potters there started making pottery.)
Mata Ortiz pottery was first made in the late 1970s, by a handful of potters (who later taught their family and friends to make pottery), the most famous being Juan Quezada, often credited with starting the pottery tradition in the village.
