I am not sure what this is. Does anyone know? I do know that it is antique. And when I bought it in the 1990's they said that it is silver. It has a colonial scene. A woman is holding a bag, there is a table with what appears to be a lantern and things. A man appears to be dancing about and another with his back turned may be reading a newspaper. On the right side by the handle a man is holding something..a small bell maybe and on the left a man is holding what looks like a rolled document or a 'spy glass'. Eagle heads hold a handle on each side.
this is a monteith bowl. You hang the base of the wine glass onto the scalloped edge placing the bowl of the glass into the basin filled with ice for chilling.
also, many of these bowl were made in brass and copper.
The dimensions of the bowl is only 6" from handle base to handle base and the bowl is 3 1/4" wide, the height of it is only 6". The picture is a little misleading. Thanks for the guess. The dimensions may give you more ideas. I am certainly at a loss. I bought it to hold potpourri in the early '90's at an antique store.
with the deminsions you give, it could not be a Monteith bowl. I am now very puzzled as to what it was used for. thanks
It is quite handsome tho.
Any markings? It looks like pattern used by E.G.Webster & Son. There should be a number somewhere which indicates the type of piece. http://www.ebay.com/itm/E-G-WEBSTER-SON-REPOUSSE-TRAY-DUTCH-FIGURAL-TAVERN-HIGH-RELIEF-SCENES-1886-19-/310372971824?pt=Antiques_Silver&hash=item4843abb530#ht_499wt_1412
