This is a beautiful large basket measuring 15 X 18". The inside is particularly interesting with starbursts of straw. I have tried to find something like it on the internet, but have had no luck. It came from my mothers collection of other baskets. She had things from Arizona, Great Lakes region, California and Canada. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This is an imported basket, not Native American, identified by the construction technique (the wrapped stitches joining the coils) which is not found on any Native American baskets. It also appears to be made from palm fiber.

The combination of materials, construction technique, form, and design patterns will usually identify where a particular basket was made. Palm fiber is widely used (but not by Native Americans), that wrapped stitch is found primarily in Mexico, the South Pacific, and India. But as far as identifying this basket, the only thing I can say is that it's not Native American.

A good book reference I always recommend is "Art of the Basket, Traditional Basketry from Around the World" by Bryan Sentance, which has lots of pictures, plus information on techniques and materials, uses, etc. of a lot of the baskets most-frequently misidentified as Native American.
