I got this box from the estate of an elderly Asian gentleman about 5 years ago. It's very sturdy and may have been painted more than once. I'd love to know what it was used for. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a document box, but I don't know. If you have any thoughts, please share.

In picture #3, is that a tray or a box in the bottom portion? Is it removable? Anything inside it, if it’s a box?

Will you please describe those 2 straps or slats inside the lid?

That's a compartment with a hinged lid on the bottom on the left. There's a gap between the two slats and the box top so I figure it's meant to hold something.

I’m thinking maybe to hold papers under the straps if the box was meant to hold writing materials. The compartment could have held supplies such as inks and brushes.
These are all thoughts from a total amateur but it would be worth checking that out.
I’ll be watching for updates as you find out more.
Best of luck to you! :-)
