I'm not familiar with Native American basketry yet I am surrounded by many Tribes of Indigenous Peoples, land, their trees and plants used to make baskets. I am assuming that this basket was made by West Coast Native Americans in the 20th Century, but if I am wrong, please someone let me know!

    1) What Tribe/area might be it be from?
    2) What plant(s) do you think might have been used to (Spruce, Red Cedar, Cattails, etc.)
    3) When do you think it might have been made?
    4) Do you think it might have had a lid?
    5) Its pretty dusty on one side, if one chose to clean the basket, would a damp cloth be adequate?

Any clues, leads or resources you might know of would be GREATLY appreciated.

You are correct that this basket came from the Pacific Northwest Coast. It was made with Sea Grasses, Redbud for the Four bands that circle from the top to the bottom. It also has Red Yarn in the middle of the blocks that circle the basket, although many of the pieces of Yarn have been lost.

This could have been made by the Aleutian tribe, or any other tribes in that area that incorporated Yarn into their Twining/Weaving.

I don't think this had a lid, based on the shape of the lip of the basket. The twining/weave looks airtight, and this may have been used to carry and cook with water.

Oh, and a lightly damp cloth will take some dirt off, but I don't do that too much. I think they show their age when they are a bit dusty.
