This family bowl arrived in NZ around the mid 1800's though could have been made many years before. It has 8 facets on the bowl and lid, is 200mm (8") in diam. and 285mm (11.25") high. Within the lid it has a small silver pebble (not a glass bubble) that has been enclosed in the glass when making. If someone can identify this it would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for your information, most appreciated; I have looked at EAPG Riverside.
This compote arrived in NZ in 1860 from England and was told as a child, the small silver pebble embedded in the glass was the makers mark. The Riverside images of compotes seem quite ornate and either cut or engraved.
this pattern was made in several colors with various decorations as well as the unadorned clear glass as you have here. It's not unusual for provenance to become confused over time. I can only report the facts as I understand them as a student of EAPG.

If's not unusual for old glass to contain particles/impurities inclusions.
Thank you'so much for unraveling my mystery ... as you mention it's quite possible that through the generations, information got muddled and its so interesting that American glass was available in NZ in the late 18o0's as most imports were from Britain or Europe.
