Finished the restore on my Hubley #509 Corvette at last. It was supposed to be completed before the Hubley Carryall restore I posted earlier this weeks. I had some issues with the final coat that held up the project.
Hubley cataloged it as a Custom Sport Car in '55 and as a Corvette in '56. It's a pretty large toy, over 12" long and it weighs about 4 lbs. It's the largest post war car Hubley made.
I got it at a decent price but it had a cracked windshield/dash and the plastic interior had shrunk. The interior had also been repainted in the reverse of the original colors. Also the hubcap for the spare was missing. I put a new replacement winshield/dash assy and found a never used or painted interior in group of parts on Ebay. I vacuformed a hubcap for the spare.
I used Testor's Gloss Bright Red and Chrome for the paint. I had trouble with the red paint chipping when removing the masking tape. I use Tamiya masking tape and usually don't have a problem when using my old reliable Krylon. I'm not completely happy with this restore, but I can live with it I guess.
Thanks for looking in,
Toyrebel
That's an expensive sinkhole, Thomas. Thanks.
I recall the sink hole too. I think it is fixed now. Yes an expensive hole.
Excellent job on the restoration. Seems to have a lot more detail than the usual Hubley. I forget the name of the blue motor, but it is an inline 6 I believe.
Thank you very much Apache. I did detail the engine more and added a little more detail on dash, but the overall body is pretty much how Hubley did it. The engine is the Blue Flame 6, a second generation of the Chevy "stove bolt" inline six cylinders that powered their cars for decades. The '53-'55 Vette engines were 250 cid with three Carter single barrels rated at 150 hp. Hubley did a decent job capturing the overall engine details. I had a '47 Fleetline, '64 and '69 Novas that all had versions of the "Stovebolt 6".
Outstanding restoration on this!!
Thanks Jscott for your kind comment. I had some paint issues and it took longer than some of my other restorations.
Hello. LOVE your restoration on this Hubley Corvette. Nicely-done!
May I inquire, please, where you purchased the new replacement windshield and interior??? I am in need of both, please. Thank you. James Zanker jpzank@aol.com
