I am baffled by this thing. Obviously it was IN a holder or bag of some type, as there is no way to attach it to anything else. The zinc or tin cap is exactly like the ones on Confederate canteens of the Civil War, but that is the only thing that I can say about it, which doesn't mean anything, really. Or does it? Or is this an early tin powder flask, which existed by the early 1800s but were not as common as copper. Any of you military collectors recognize this? It measures 7" in diameter and is about 2" thick. Weighs 9.2 oz or 262 grams. Appreciate any and all responses.
