My Uncle Jack Greggs brought this home for my Grandmother Rose at the end of WWII. I'm assuming that like most of the post-war Japanese Sterling, it's silver plate over brass. It's from a jewelry store in Tokyo, and has been driving me crazy for the last 40 years.
It has a map of China and Japan engraved on it, but, if you look at the close-up, there are small circular marks scattered all over it. At first I thought they represented cities, but some of them fall in the 'ocean' part of the engraving - then I thought they could be islands, but some of them are on the coast of China and the island of Japan. I have no idea what they signify, but would really like to know - has anyone seen anything like this before?

I found the original jewelry store that the dish came from (Yamazaki Shoten) online, and sent them the pictures. They researched their files, but were unable to discover what it means, although they did say that the map is of China & Taiwan. They were of the opinion that the dish was a custom order, but had no other info.
