The newspaper article has been my biggest source of info so far.
I’m still trying to figure out the 5th armored unit.

Yep-- I'd say you have a couple of folks items in the grouping.
Some from an infantryman (Combat Infantryman's Badge, and infantry collar brass) and an enlisted man (Good Conduct Medal).
Maybe it belonged to a 5th Armor Division soldier in one of its infantry battalions?

It may be from his first enlistment. I’m still trying to confirm this as well.
My (biological) mom said the only 2 fights her mom and dad ever had was over him buying a Piper plane, and him re-enlisting.
It is doubtful as the article specifically mentions he went directly into the Army Air Corps.
Additionally, a search on the database doesn't yield his name.

That’s true Scott.
One question I have, and you may know.
Since he was a civilian pilot, would the Army offer him a rank of Lieutenant to persuade him to join?
Was that typical?
Most WW2 pilots were commissioned lieutenants.
There were also warrant officers and enlisted pilots.
