This heavy part is about 18” long and 2” diameter. It is made of a very heavy hardwood (Oak?). It has thick steel bands on the ends, and a through hole in the center of about 3/4” diameter. The oddest feature is the set of through slots, one on each side of the hole, each about 4” long and 1/4” wide. Seems like the slots could have been used to separate the driving reins of horse drawn wagon. But what is it?
Looks like a caulking mallet head without the handle. Used to make wooden ships waterproof
