Can anyone tell me about this chair? Was the seat originally a caned seat? It's been black as long as my mother can remember and she's 87. Should I get it caned and stripped or should it stay as is. It's been passed down ib the family and originally from my great-great aunt.

I am not an antique chair expert, but I think the seat is original. I used to have an old rocker that had a seat like this, but the fabric was really worn. I eventually found a vintage fabric that I liked that was similar and recovered it. I just went over the old so it didn't decrease it's value. Sorry I'm not more help. I do love your chair and would keep it's cushion if I was you.
