This collection includes examples of each of the variants shown on United States patent number 289,207 dated November 27, 1883. The patent was issued to Charles H. Barr, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and was assigned to his patent attorney, ThomasB. Kerr, also of Pittsburg.

This style of wire was generally used as the top wire of a fence to fulfill the lawful requirements for visible fencing. Barbed wire was sold by the pound. The smaller size barbs reduced the weight of the completed wire to allow it to be used for the remainder of the fence.

Probably cheaper to put up warning signs facing the cows so they can read it.
    6. TheGateKeeper TheGateKeeper, 5 years ago
Good idea blunderbuss2 - The trick is figuring out which language to put on the signs.
    7. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 5 years ago
Cowese of course, unless they are Burma cattle, and then use Burmese. Alabamese would probably work.
    8. TheGateKeeper TheGateKeeper, 5 years ago
Do you know the Fresian dialect of Cowese?

The people I have for friends, Roy, call that "conversational". We have class. Maybe it's lower class, but it's still class ! LOL ! English is my 2nd language followed by several others. Alabamese is my native language. When I grew up in N. AL, I don't think they ever heard of that visibility law. Is that federal ?

Thanks for your praise Brunswick. Would love to see photos of the old visible wire still up in your area.
