My husband is 64 years old. This has been in his family for a long time. He said as a young boy, it was old then. His father was a farmer-they used it to store bolts and things. We would like to know it’s original purpose. Any help, greatly appreciated.

1st impression is a water wheel.

I'm kinda remembering that similar-ish 'water wheel' things like this were sorta popular as "yard art" (w/each shelf full of ornamental plants or whatever) back in the 1970's or so...?? FWIW, which might be nothing at all... ;-) :-)

I have absolutely no reason to doubt what your husband says about this. I also grew up in farm country (although a number of years before your husband). These miniature water wheels were fairly common back then and they were certainly used to store anything from nuts and bolts to tools to small replacement parts, you name it and it might be in there. Rich people had fancy imported ones in their gardens or by their patio. Poor people didn't have a patio or flower garden, only a vegetable garden to grow their food. Thanks for sharing it, this is one of those many things that I had forgotten about over the years.

Thank you everyone. We will believe it was a holder of bolts and nuts. It’s stayed in good shape to be tucked away in a corner of the barn for so many years.
