The first time I built this dollhouse (from a kit), I let my grandson play with it. He had Army men battling with table leg clubs, windows punched out, it was awful—looked like a crack house! He grew up so it was safe to rebuild it!

Second time around, I made it better, prettier, and made it off limits to kids playing Army battles.

I made my elderly mom very happy by recreating the bedroom furniture she and my dad bought when they married. It was memory-stimulating for her when I asked her to describe the furniture pieces in detail, box fans,, bedspread, phone, just anything to get her talking about her recollections.
(I remembered all their possessions very well since I grew up with those same home furnishings.)

Our real house wasn’t as pretty, but, hey, it’s my fantasy upgrades!

I want to point out that the “big” picture over the sofa I actually a real red ink drawing my mom made about 20 years earlier. I found it in her desk and made a frame of balsa wood to decorate the living room wall.

We didn’t really have stained glass windows, but I did another fantasy upgrade.
One says, “Live happy with small means”, another says,”Find joy every day”, the others are just diamond shapes or flowers.

In the sewing room, the light over the machine is made from a ping pong ball and really does light up.
I made the tiny quilt on the quilt rack, stocked the basket and shelves with fabric, yarns, put a lady’s fancy grip pistol in the edge of the fabric basket by the sewing machine just in case of danger,

To be honest, this jarred my mom’s memory but also mine....the more details we recalled, the more fun we had with it.
And I hope when I’m extremely elderly, it brings back some memories to me.

I’m going to post some interior pictures separately tomorrow.
    I hope you enjoy!! :-D

My wife picked up a old tin doll house to pass it off to one the the girls that work for her and give it to her daughter and we picked up some old doll house stuff for inside over the years and gave it to her as well...we told her to teach her about recycling...lol she thought that was a great Idea ...nice job on the doll house ..

Thank you, Findings, for the lovely comment! That’s a great teaching tool to get others tuned in to recycling and “upcycling”.
When I was working my dollhouses, I saved toothpaste tube caps because they make perfect flowerpots and a thimble makes a perfect waste-paper can. The plastic caps of soda bottles got painted green to become bases for shrubs.

I’m sure the people who received your gift will have their imaginations stimulated and enjoy it!

Lata, thank you for the compliment! I recall that your own dollhouse has impressive details!

Absolutely Wonderful! Your attention to the small details is fantastic!! I built a dollhouse from a kit for my daughter when she was about 8 yrs. old, so I know, and can appreciate, the work involved in building one. I got really involved with it, and customized it down to the details like the baseboard trim, wallpaper, doorknobs and working lights! Full disclosure, I think I had more fun building it than my little girl had enjoying it!
