I got this from a garage sale buried in a box of old papers and buttons. I was wondering what it is. It is very heavy made of steel I believe its about 4in tall and 2 1/2 wide and an inch thick. I'm pretty sure it a stamp plate of somekind, but for what ,when and where i have no idea. The plate says USN with an anchor inscribed with a chain within. If anyone has an idea let me know. thanks
Looks like a stamping plate that would be used to stamp through gold leaf on to leather to make a name patch for flight suits. They had a special machine in the parachute loft that did all of these.......also had different rating stamps and numbers and letters for anything else you wanted on your patch.
Thank you for the information. I had a feeling it was a stamp plate I just have never seen anything like it. I hope it had something to do with flight suits.., that would be really cool.
I think it is a stamp too, but not for leather patches for flight suits.
Most of the USN leather tags (that I have seen) are about 4" long and would be oriented with the long edge parallel to the ground, with the name read across the long way.
Based on the size of this stamp, it would take up an entire leather USN name tag and it would all be oriented in the wrong direction.

I guess I read too fast for the size to sink in..............scott's right but I can't think of something else. I do note the stars at either end of the cross bar like Master Chief Rate...............wonder if this may have been used for wood or paper. Never seen another.............thanks to scott for catching me up.
It is a United States Navy Master Chief RANK, not rate. The U.S.N. stands for...Unity, Service, and Navigation. I have no idea what this was used for though.
