Found this wonderful mid-century salad set which I'm assuming is made of teak. It is marked on the bottom of each bowl, but is very blurring. Any ideas? I love it and just would love to know where they came from. Thanks! ;)

I cannot make out all of the writing on the bottom, but part of it says “monkeypod wood”.

This set is a fairly common import from the Philippines. They were made in all different shapes from pineapples, to clam shell, to acorns, to leaves. Common during the 70's & 80's. I am sure if you google the right wood you will find oodles of them online. I see them on eBay all the time.

Hawaii?? Interesting. Makes me wonder why there is a law against planting it there???

whoops, I just saw fhrjr2 comment. Maybe I'm wrong. My niece used to live in Hawaii and to me about that wood a long time ago saying it was native to Hawaii. What the heck, Philippines is just a hop away!

haha I didn't know that either. Guess I'm gonna have to school my niece !!!

I lived in Hawaii for a few years— saw lots of monkeypod products for sale in all the tourist shops but it was produced elsewhere....kind of deceitful when you are getting a souvenir of your travels.
It’s kinda like some of the best tasting chocolate covered macadamia nuts....the are actually made in California but shipped to Hawaii stores!

shareurpassion The tree itself is not native to Hawaii. However that doesn't mean they don't import the lumber or logs to make items out of to sell. Actually the wood isn't native to the Philippines either although they import both the live trees and the lumber. The wood is native to central and south America. It is a very pretty wood and easy to turn on a lathe or carve. I actually prefer many of the woods from south America for lathe turning.

the middle part appears to say HAND CARVED

      First word looks like Genuine.
So “Genuine monkeypod wood hand carved”

You make me laugh with your hand carved. Those people use hand held power tools like routers and dremel's and to them it constitutes hand carved. It isn't like they sit with a hand chisel and mallet. Long as they used their hands it is hand carved.
