      Doesn't look like oak to me, probably something closer to a softwood (pine?) with a much more closed grain. Agree completely with your "unbelievable" thought...that's one of the main reasons I drive a pickup truck... <lol> ;-) :-) :-)

      Picture 1 doesn't enlarge but from what I see, I would say it is made of yellow pine. Pine is a softwood but one of the harder more durable species of pine. I'm not sure about other areas but I know pine was commonly used in furniture up in the New England area. It is far less expensive than hardwood and was used for a more affordable grade of furniture for those who may not have been able to afford top of the line.
