Went to Canonsburg, Pa. today and found this painting in an antique shop there. The painter is E. W. Von Obenauer (1884 - 1964). He was a Russian immigrant who lived most of his life near Uniontown, Pa. This seascape depicts the East River (actually a salt water tidal estuary) and the Brooklyn Bridge, with the Woolworth Building in the background. The Woolworth Building was completed in 1912 and, at 792 feet high, was the tallest building in the world until 1930. The painting is dated 1916.
Love the painting, very much! The frame is amazing, but I'd love to have that picture. A great find. (The statue on the right is just a tad distracting.)
