I have an item that I hope you may be able to offer some information about its age, etc... I have a Brass Candle lantern that I acquired at an estate auction, and many people I have spoke with believe it may be from the civil war era or possibly older. May have been used for war purposes or railroad use? I am mostly interested in determining its approx. age, primary use, value, and what the overall condition would be for something of this age. I would greatly appreciate any and all information you may be able to offer. Thank you in advance for your help and consideration.
Overall height including handle 14"T
approx. 5"W
glass lense approx. 3" Circle
Candle tube measures approx. 5 1/2" H
Front door mearures approx. 4"W x 4" T
Main body mearsures approx. 5"W x 5"T
Appears to be made from brass with small brass blind sytle rivets? The back of the lantern has a bar with a spring type mechanism that allows the main body to be slid up and down the lenght of the uprights.
Correction!
I just put a magnet to it and it stuck, so its some sort of metal tin?
This is quite rare/ it is a japanese military candle powered lantern as used in the caves that we so often times used in the pacific by the Japanese/ it is only the second onje I have seen/ john kruesel
