This necklace is a recent addition to my collection and I’m so thrilled.
Kate Muriel Mason Eadie was born on the 4th of May 1880. I was very lucky to buy this lovely Art and Craft necklace has she wasn’t a prolific jewellery maker so her work is rare. Like more of her era she also designed other things such as large fire screens. In September 1940, she married the Birmingham Pre-Raphaelite painter Sidney Meteyard whom she met when she studied at Birmingham School of Art, having modelled for many paintings of his. They also worked together on stained glass.
In 1915 she was elected an associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artist, with whom she had exhibited a case of jewellery in 1908-1909, a processional cross, and another case of jewellery in 1911. She died on the 8th November 1945.
The necklace has seven silver drops with leaves surrounding the beautiful coloured Aquamarine Stones. On some of the leaves their is enamel I don’t know if this was mean’t to be, or over the time the enamel as faded. Someone told me that this is how she enamelled meaning she randomly enamelled part of the leaves. The back is so neatly finished it’s like a piece of art itself.
The case is the original as you can see the necklace fits prefectly the company Payne and sons is a family business which was established in 1790. The Oxford shop is now run by the 7th and 8th generation.
Many thanks for looking.

Beautiful Belle Epoch! What lovely garlands creating an elegant jewel. Breathtakingly gorgeous.
So beautiful Jean!! Great to see you posting again and what an awesome post to come back with. I love the history and story as well.
Thank you Plain-air-painter,for your comment it’s much appreciated.
Hi Scott, yes it’s been my first posting for a while, been busy with over things. I have a lot of pieces in the UK so I can only post when visiting. I do have some wonderful Bernard Instone jewellery which are top class, unfortunately I don’t have them at the moment.
This Kate Eadie necklace has to be a one off for me it’s very rarely they come along so I’m very lucky to be able to have found it. I hope your well Scott and thank you for passing by and showing an interest.
Congratulations Jean on acquiring this. It's a gorgeous piece and as you say, the back tells the story of an exceptional metalworker. I'm pleased such a rare and beautiful piece of jewellery is with you!
How beautiful! What a wonderful necklace to have and to wear. I want parties like that today, where you can expect people to wear those necklaces!!
Hi Karen, even though I say it myself this necklace is probably going to be a one off. Kate Eadie’s work is difficult to find and I have to say expensive, so I don’t think I’ll come across any of her work that I could afford unless I might get lucky. I’ve studied this necklace and she has a very distinctive style I’ll be keeping my eyes open. I hope your well Karen and thanks for your lovely comment.
Hi Elisabethan, to be honest you can dress this neckless up or down. I’ve worn it with jeans and a top and it looks great. Thanks for your comment Elisabethan, I hope your well, I haven’t been on CW for a while. :-))
Many thanks
