This is a very obscure model of a Boeing B-17G PPF MICKEY Ship. The PFF radar systems were developed at a Rome Air Depot Base located in Rome, New York. This was a bomb-through-the-clouds radar navigation device that was mounted where the ball-turret was positioned. The Synthane-Taylor Corp. of Oaks, PA (NW of Philadelphia) was short-listed to produce the enclosure that housed the radar unit in the B-17's belly.
This model was created at S-T shops as a presentation piece to the AAF when they were awarded the contact to produce the enclosures. They molded the model from the same lightweight phenolic material. The model was found about 40 years ago after having been returned to Synthane and left with an employee. His estate made it available and was purchased. Amazingly, the original presentation letter was stuffed up into the cast iron base to give excellent provenance. After restoration, a copy was made of the original letter and a pair original matchbooks from the Rome Depot were located to round out the display.
