I bought this recently and I have determined from another post on this site that the lock states JUL 9872, to mean July 9th, 1872. I get that this dates it approximately but I was more curious about the stamp that is found on bottom of the trunk that shows 36 or 38 N. CRYS. PAC. I do not know what this means or refers to and was hoping that someone would know. Thank you.
Not sure what the N. is for but the 36, 38 should be the length of the trunk, 36 inches or 38 inches, two sizes. The CRYS. probably stands for crystallized finish, which came in many colors, gold being the most popular. The PAC. I believe stands for packing trunk, so it is a code for a 36 or 38 inch crystallized tin finish packing trunk.
And yes the latches on the front were patented in July 9th 1872.
Thank you so much. I have asked this question all over and this is the first reasonable response. lol Thanks
