Found these at a garage sale for .50 cents even though I'm not sure but i would say these are 1930 -ish. Probably pot metal but they are very soft almost feel like lead the bottom markings are c 6. If anyone knows what these are made of i would appreciate it
Probably spelter (pot metal), but possibly pewter - do they scratch easily? If so, probably the latter. The caps are probably steel to minimize corrosion from the salt.
On a side note, I purchased a S&P set very similar to yours a long, long time ago. They were my FIRST 'antique' purchase at the ripe old age of eight in the late 50's. Not sure what appealed to me other than they were in my price range (maybe five bucks). At any rate, I still have 'em! But will eternally wish that I knew then what I know now - I'd have done some serious shopping at Eleanor's Antiques. And she would still have these shakers.
Struggling with my memory but I believe c6 is a pewter touch mark that indicates fineness or quality. A touch mark is to pewter what a maker mark or hallmark is to silver. I seem to remember it being British. Long time since I collected it and memory isn't the best always.
