Ok so, here is the deal. I had to buy this because I felt bad that no one else might.
I do however love the crystal part of the piece but why the hel(_) would anyone put something like it on what I think is a lamp base? I am going to either clean up the base or possibly paint it because I really like it a lot. Have no idea who made the crystal but don't care, it has a home with me <3
can't answer your question as to why that pedestal base was added, as that pattern line does have a compote with a pedestal base; but painting wouldn't hurt it... The glass is EAPG: Dalzell Bros. & Gilmore #D21 Starred Block c1885

Close, TallCakes. The pattern is 21D. Many of DG&L patterns were given the "D" designation preceded by a number.
I can't tell if this was a berry bowl that someone decided to add this base to, or the base was added to a compote whose base broke off. If the former, someone was just getting creative. If the latter, it is called a "make-do." A make-do is an item that was repurposed or repaired in some way (other than with glue) to give it continued life. The repairs on make-dos are generally in a contrasting material (as the metal with glass here), and were often done to give the item a different purpose (a lamp base used for a large pincushion, etc). Their quirky, homespun look make them desirable to collectors of this sort of thing. I explain make-dos even more in my book on Bryce, Higbee glass (and show one too!). Whether it's a make-do or someone's craft project, I'm glad you saved it Meli!
Oh, and I wouldn't paint it. If this truly is a make-do, collectors want them as "original" as possible.
