I found this adorable trinket in a 15 pound box of jewelry. I have never seen anything like it. I think it’s safe to say it could be a souvenir but I haven’t a clue of time period or where it was bought. There are no marks of origin anywhere. I adore the replica copper penny with the date of 1964. Have any of you seen one like this?

Are you saying the penny is a replica? I didn’t quite understand that part.
      The pendant is pretty!

@Newfld Thank you so much. She’s a fun little find.

@Watchsearcher Thank you. Haha I just realized how I wrote that. I meant the replica penny. LOL

How does the replica penny compare in size to authentic pennies?
    5. GlamorouslyRefinedFun GlamorouslyRefinedFun, 5 years ago
@Watchsearcher I would say it’s about 1/5th size of a regular penny. But the detail on it is amazing. Very clear & an exact replica & even feels the same.

Thanks for that info. I also have a “mini penny” - they do look just like the real deal...and so cute!
I was trying to get an idea for the size of the pendant judging it by the penny being able to fit inside.

@Watchsearcher That’s cool that you have a penny too. How did you come by yours? Oddly enough, the basket pendant is pretty sizable and deep for the penny. It’s an odd little thing but so much fun to look at haha

I found mine a few years ago among unusual coins my dad had saved. Mine is 1964 also.
Back when I came across this one, I read online that they were produced as a political statement about the shrinking value of our money.

@Watchsearcher I had no idea. That’s really cool!!! After posting this, I did a little snooping and found that there are Nantucket Baskets that house these mini pennies. According to New England legend, when sailors ship out of Nantucket, they would toss 2 pennies overboard to ensure safe sailing.
Either way, I enjoy either lore lol
On a side note: I’d love to hear about the unusual coins your father had collected.

Soooo many! For decades, he had a variety of soft drink machines at his businesses and when he would remove the coins from them every night, he would find all sorts of foreign coins, slugs and even US pennies that had been cut down to the size of a dime to cheat the machine.

He put all the bogus stuff aside....now I have quite a lot of it.

I don’t know where he got the tiny penny. It’s likely a friend gave it to him as a joke. It’s a tiny treasure to me. :^)

@Watchsearcher lol that’s so interesting. The things people will do for a cold soft drink lol That’s a fun story.

Nantucket baskets were popular handbags in the 1960s. In addition, where I grew up, it was the custom (according to my mother) that you didn't give someone a purse without putting a penny in it.

@plein-air-painter That is really awesome!! Thank you. I had no idea of the lore behind these little things.
