Purchased week of September 13th, 2019 at a local Estate Sales.
This is a beautiful and unusual pendant and chain by Jane Carpenter who works under the studio name "Millodot". Well known for her reverse-painting technique, this piece is a fine example of her serious craft, yet whimsical style of illustration.

Her work starts with a piece of clear, beveled edge acrylic on which she then reverse-paints an animal and/or scene. The piece is then bezel set onto a decorative sterling silver pendant base. The detail and care she takes in her artistry are apparent in every aspect of her work, right down to choosing a sterling silver.

The pendant measures height 1-3/4 inches by 3/4 inch wide by 2 inches in length.

Jane Carpenter of Millodot creates pins, earrings, necklaces, and paintings. The designs are inspired by my own menagerie of animals and delights from the garden and the sea. Inspired by a reverse painted Victorian portrait in an antique shop. Carpenter said that she “began experimenting with a technique from the 4th century, which was originally done on glass, I reverse paint a modern material, Lucite. Reverse painting has a characteristic wet appearance, a sense of depth and brilliant color similar to that of fired enamel. Each piece of Lucite is cut, shaped and polished, then hand-painted under magnification using toothpicks and tiny brushes.

The painted piece is then mounted into a prong or bezel setting made of sterling silver. The results create a delightful piece of jewelry that is colorful, highly detailed, and tells a story."
