A interesting find of recent is this solid brass letter opener which as one can see in the pics sports a brass Anchor with rope for a handle.
The handle gives some weight to it. More than I've felt on letter openers in the past. Which 8 actually like. The rope not being molded into the piece or casting really gives it a more realistic look.
I take it the little square on the handle is the remnants of a label of some sort. Perhaps a "made in.." or company label. It's unreadable so I have no idea what it once said.
I did find another like it on eBay out of Europe. All it mentioned is that it was "vintage". Being eBay, it may or may not be.
This apparently was part of a set. The letter opener as well as a paper weight which had a similar anchor and rope on a base. Again made of brass. Whether it was sold as a set or separately I do not know.
That's all I know at this point about this piece. Of you know more, please chime in.
Of course, as with other items you may have seen in my collection, I'll be polishing it up again to a brilliant shine as was seen when it was new.
A quick polish on the blade section shows this piece should be quite a looker when brought back to a high sheen. And I'll coat it to protect it and hold the bright work when done.
I'm eager to see it polished back up... Till then enjoy the view of it's current state.
Cheers...
I have one with almost an exact handle match. However it is a shoe horn. My grandfather was in the navy during world war II and passed about 10 years ago. I have since has it passed down to me. Please update if you've found any further information.
