Have had this painting for years bought it at the Goodwill. The painting is signed H Clapp.
H stands for Howard . Howard Clapp was a California artist.. The painting is a abstract watercolor 15" X 20". There is damage all along the bottom of the painting from being stuck in the frame.
Nice painting. Definitely one of my dad’s “wet into wet” watercolor paintings. I can tell by the style. His full name was Howard Dyer Clapp. He was born in 1929 in Reedley, California. Was married with four sons. He was president of the National Watercolor Society three times. He was an educator (junior college, junior high school, adult school), but spent much of his working career as an elementary school principal in Burbank, CA. He also has watercolor paintings and sketches in the U.S. Navy collection. He never dated anything. I’d guess yours is from the 1950’s.
Just for your information because it’s so unusual and such a quandary still...
At the age of 67 and a half, he disappeared returning from a trip to New Mexico a couple of weeks after Easter in 1988. His remains were not found until 1991 when the Pima, AZ sheriff pronounced him dead.
Ah! Don’t know how to edit a previous post.
That birth date should be 1920 not 1929,
Thank you so much for all the info. Yes I did read that about your father so very sorry. I live in Los Angeles not far from Burbank got this one at a thrift store a few years ago now. It is strange but I love it. Do you collect his work.
I think I found another of your Dad’s watercolor paintings today LClapp. I posted a photo in Show & Tell. Title is “Taxi Instructions”. Must be neat to find these!
